Stunningly situated by the River Thames, Greenwich possesses some of the finest architecture in Britain. Indeed the historic buildings of maritime Greenwich are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for it having the “finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles”. Unsurprisingly, they are regularly the backdrop for feature films.
Greenwich has a rich mix of property types for all budgets, including numerous Victorian terraced homes, palatial Georgian townhouses, riverside apartments, cobbled mews cottages and a host of swish existing or upcoming developments, including Greenwich Peninsula, Greenwich Millennium Village and Greenwich Square.
Its splendid centre is dominated by the imposing St Alfege Church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor (who trained under Wren), and the attractive streets around Hyde Vale, Crooms Hill and Royal Hill are generally most sought after. The ‘Ashburnham triangle’ conservation area of stuccoed terraced houses dating from the 1820s with later cul-de-sacs, is also very popular.
Transport-wise, residents are spoilt for choice, with both trains and a DLR service to central London and the city, and at North Greenwich, the Jubilee line. Another option is the regular riverboat services, while London City Airport is nearby too.
Popular state primaries include James Wolfe and Meridian, and for secondary options the excellent state and private schools of Blackheath are close by.
There’s stacks of cultural opportunities including several small art galleries, the extensive National Maritime Museum and The Royal Observatory. Greenwich Picture house is a must for cinephiles, and live performance thrives too, with the Greenwich Theatre, a summer comedy festival and also Greenwich Music Time, with concerts in the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College. And of course, we mustn’t forget the 02, the world’s busiest arena.
Around Greenwich’s sprawling markets are many eateries, coffee houses, pubs and shops: it really is a fabulous place to hang out for an evening or at weekends.
